American Brown Ale

Style Overview

Our Impressions: Tastes like brown, but in a good way! Sweet like a chocolate chip cookie but with enough bitterness to keep the beer in balance.

BJCP Guidelines: 19C American Brown Ale

ABV: 4.3 – 6.2%
IBU: 20-30
SRM: 18-35 (Light Brown to Very Dark Brown)

Style History

Early American craft beer interpretation of English Brown Ales-more bitterness and pine/citrus hop character in place of earthy/spiciness. Craft brewers continued to increase both the hopping and alcohol to create the Brown IPA.
